Best + healthiest Oatmeal for breakfast (Porridge)

 

What's the difference between Oatmeal and Porridge? Porridge is a type of hot breakfast that can be made from a variety of grains, vegetables and even some legumes. In some countries, Pourridge is made from flour and sorghum with other grains ground inside, like corn or barley.

Our Silver and Gold "Oatmeal for Breakfast" recipe is made using gluten-free quick oats and cooked with some fruits and spices to make for a healthy breakfast... or an evening guilt-free snack that will satisfy. Serve alongside plain low-fat yogourt or with a bit of milk – in this case almond milk is a great choice.

Ingredients

  • 2 Cups of quick-cook oatmeal

  • 1 Cup water

  • 1 Cup milk (we prefer unsweetened almond milk)

  • 1 apple or pear, peeled and chopped

  • 1 Tbsp. cinnamon powder

  • 1 T. vanilla extract

  • pinch of salt

  • 1/4 Cup hemp seeds (optional, but they are best used as they're extremely healthy for breakfast!)

  • 1/4 Cup natural maple syrup (organic is best)

  • 1-1/2 Cup frozen cranberries or currants

 

Here's how to make it:

In a medium size pot, combine the oatmeal with water and milk, cinnamon and apple/pear, vanilla extract and pinch of salt.

Bring to a gentle boil and simmer on very low, mixing to ensure nothing sticks to the bottom of the pot. 

​

Simmer for 3 to 4 minutes and then remove from heat, add hemp seeds and fruit, maple syrup for sweetness. Mix to combine and cover for 2 minutes until the cranberrries have defrosted. 

​

Serve immediately with a dollop of natural unsweetened yoghourt or a bit more milk... or enjoy as is! If preferred, dress overtop with a few chopped nuts such as almonds or pecans.
