Toilet Fizzies:
For a clean, freshly scented bowl every time!
At Silver & Gold Magazine, we enjoy experimenting with trying out different "DIY" recipes,
from our own shampoo to making your own Ghee... But this recipe is one we just love because it leaves your toilet bowl clean, fresh-scented, and especially because these little balls FIZZ when you drop them in the bowl!
These toilet fizz balls are easy to make, and use just a few non-toxic household cleaning ingredients. Just use your favourite mould to shape them, such as silicone truffle moulds, or you can easily shape them on your hand and with the help of a melon baller!
Do you have a favourite scent? We have suggested using lemongrass as the main essential oil, because its scent is quite strong yet fresh and citrusy, and we also enjoy how it combines well with grapefruit essential oil... But you can use any scent you like! Favourite
ones include lemon and lime essential oils, rosemary and ylang-ylang for more
of a flowery/earthy scent, or peppermint for a minty cleanliness scent you'll love.

How to make toilet fizzies:
To make your own toilet fizzies, you'll need:

-
1/2 cup baking soda
-
1/4 cup citric acid (don't worry, it's a very weak organic acid that occurs naturally in citrus fruits. It's safe even for consumption... and you can buy it in the bulk section of your supermarket)
-
hydrogen peroxide (from your local dollar store is fine)
-
1/2 teaspoon of lemongrass essential oil
-
1/4 teaspoon of grapefruit essential oils (or whichever essential oils you have/like)
-
a silicone mould or a melon baller

First, combine the baking soda and citric acid in a bowl. Then, carefully sprinkle the hydrogen peroxide just a bit at a time! If you add too much at once, the mixture will fizz out - you don't want that effect because then it won't fizz when you drop them into the toilet bowl.

We thought it was clever to make just a little pin prick on the hydrogen peroxide container, this way you can't get too much out at once.

Sprinkle the hydrogen peroxide and mix using a spoon. You're looking for a consistency that "just holds its shape in your hands" when you crunch a ball of it together.

Once you have the right consistency, then add your essential oils and mix using your hands and fingers. Then you can shape into the silicone container, pressing in carefully. Or if you're using a melon baller, shape into small balls and set aside on a piece of parchment paper or a place.

You'll notice that the mixture 'puffs up' a bit above the mould (it's normal), so if this is going to mess up the shape for you, just fill them HALF the size of the container.

Let them sit in the mould for a few hours, until they completely dry up and harden - about 4 to 6 hours. Then you can pop them out and display them in a nice glass container!

When ready to use, drop one toilet fizzie ball into the toilet and watch it fizz up, cleaning and freshening your whole bathroom! Flush when complete.

You can use one of these fizzie balls every day if you want to, or even every time you flush!
